Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
UNDERSTANDING OCD
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric condition characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) that create significant anxiety, along with repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed in an attempt to reduce distress.
OCD is not simply a preference for order or cleanliness—it can become exhausting, time-consuming, and profoundly disruptive to daily life, relationships, work, and emotional well-being. While many individuals benefit from evidence-based therapy and medication, some continue to experience persistent symptoms that require a more advanced treatment approach.
Obsessions
Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that feel distressing, difficult to control, and often inconsistent with a person’s values or intentions. Common themes may include contamination fears, harm-related thoughts, religious or moral distress, perfectionism, or an intense need for certainty.
Compulsions
Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals are performed to temporarily reduce anxiety or prevent a feared outcome. These may include checking, reassurance-seeking, cleaning, counting, arranging, reviewing memories, or internal mental rituals that become difficult to stop.
